Is there a product that will keep my plants watered while I'm on vacation for two weeks?
Question:This is in lieu of calling friends to have to come over to the house to continually water the plants. Is there anything I could pick-up at Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Home Depot?
Answers:
Yes, they sell a product which is a kind of gel/moisture beads that soaks up water, then as the plant dries, it releases the water again. You can get it at a plan store, but a cheaper thing to use is a baby diaper. I know it sounds weird but they have the same stuff inside them (to soak up moisture). You just cut open the diaper, bury it in the soil, and let it soak up the water. As the plant dries, the water will seep out.
I'm not sure if it will work for 2 weeks though. It depends on how hot/dry your house is and how big your plants are.
If you're really attached to your plants, you might be better off getting your friends or a neighborhood kid to water them.
a friendly neighbor might help
check with major garden supply stores
That what friends are for... hum the song and call one or two to handle the duties for you.
Ok, I'm gonna tell you what my stepmom told me and she's a real country lady. She said to take piece of cotton rope and a plastic gallon jug. Dig hole near plant roots and bury one end of rope. Fill jug with water and place other end of rope in water. The end of rope must go to bottom of jug. The rope will continuously water plants. Never tried it myself but she says she uses it all the time. Should last hopefully 2 wks. depending on how hot it gets. If you try it, let me know if it works. If don't want to go to that extreme Home Depot will have, don't know name, something by Miracle Grow that will absorb then release water slowly. Good luck!
