How do I get rid of brown recluse spiders from my back yard?
Question:I live in the city but there is a small field behind my house. I saw one today while I was doing yard work and now I am really freaked out to go into my back yard. My husband killed it with the weed eater, but I am afraid that there will be more of them out there and I have a outdoor dog that I am worried about himgetting bitten. Is there anything that I can do to keep these horriable creatures from being in my yard? Someone please help me!!!
Answers:
Those are not brown recluse. Brown recluse hate light, hence the "recluse". Brown recluse hid in dry dark areas such as boxes, basements, sheds, wood piles, ect.
What you have is a yard full of harmless wolf spiders or more commonly known as brown grass spiders. They are non-venomous but can become extremely large. Personally, I hate spiders even when i know they aren't venomous.
A good solution is to have the yard treated with a pestaside that works with spiders. The best part about this is that even if the spiders aren't killed, if you kill their food source they will go elsewhere for food.
They are big, scary and terrible looking creatures, but otherwise quite harmless to you and your 50lb dog.
no idea but call a exterminattor???
exterminator big time!
i would go to your hardware store and ask them what to use and tell them you have a dog
They like rotting wood and undisturbed, dry areas. Get your hubby to weed whack the back yard every weekend and you ought to have no trouble.. lol
An exterminator may be better able to soothe your fears, though. I understand - I'm an arachnophobe. I'm very proud of myself for actually getting the link, below .. cos it had pictures. ;)
There is nothing you can do. I'm surprised that you even saw one - they aren't very big and are a light, light brown from the pictures I've seen.
I live in Las Vegas and brown recluse's are all over. I have lived here for 10 years and have had no problems. I also have dogs and as far as I know none have been bitten.
So I really wouldn't worry about it, but if your paranoid talk to a pest control guy. I don't know if the brown recluse will only die by direct contact spray of pest killing chemicals or just by general spraying.
Now we also have black widows-you can see these baby's from 10 feet away they are soo big. They are direct contact and only die if you hit them with the chemical spray, not by the pest control guy coming around and spraying. I wonder if what you killed was either a black widow female or even male.
Hope this helps. I usually keep a pest killing spray around just in case a spider is spotted.
I don't think you should attempt to eradicate all of the spiders in your field, or even the type you found without positively identifying it as dangerous first. Spiders eat other harmful insects, and you could alter the mini ecosystem of your field potentially inviting unmanageable populations of grasshoppers, mosquitoes flies and plant lice. (YUCK) This in turn will invite predators of these critters like mice frogs and bats, and their predators.and thei...and..
I am a frady cat when come to spiders of any kind. I'd call a terminator if I were you. They know how to take care of spiders I hope.
First off, in your property make sure there is no unecessary brush or especially old wood piles. You may want to remove any large rocks. If not, don't disturb them. Brown recluse spiders are extremely poisonous, yes, but the reason they are called "recluse" is that they don't want to come across you any more than you do them. They tend to remain hidden in stone walls and in wood piles or piles of trash.Your back yard really should be fairly safe, especially if there is a lot of traffic in it, and no excess crap lying around. Also, remember that there are many different varieties of spider that look very similar to the recluse.
highly unlikely that's what you saw,if it is,it's very serious, most llikely what we call wolf spiders, the recluse is rare, hard to find, and hard to identify without a close up inspection
