Tea tree essential oil (EO), peppermint EO, and lavendar oil (among others) are good at removing fleas. Neem oil would disrupt their reproduction but is smelly.
Caution: some essential oils are toxic to cats. Do a search for fleas and peppermint and you will get those remedies along with other natural remedies.
There are also non toxic commercial products available now including Flea B Gone and De Flea (by Natural Chemistry).
Put a shallow plate of water with a bit of dish soap in the water (the soap breaks the surface tension of the water - fleas can jump out without the soap) on the floor under a lamp at night. Let that be the only light left on. The fleas are attracted to the light, jump near it, land on the plate and drown. It works great.
I don't know that salt does anything at all. If you want to control the reemergence of fleas, you need to treat the home with insect growth regulator (juvenile growth hormone). This usually comes in fumigating spray bombs but if you want to avoid using the poison, I've seen it in little bottles to be diluted with water and applied with a pump sprayer. Then you can use the pan of water and lamp as described above to catch the adults. As the eggs hatch out, the larvae eat dead skin and dried blood in the carpets and upholstery, ingesting the hormone which keeps them from maturing. They die as juveniles. The effect lasts at least 6 months.
I read that 20 mule team borax was good at getting rid of many different insects. To get rid of fleas vacuum, then sprinkle it on your carpeting, use a broom to sweep down into the carpet, wait about an hour, and then vacuum. The 20 mule team borax dries out the flea larva and kills it.
