I have just bourght my first place - and needed some help?

Question:I don't really no what i am suppose to set up (i.e phone line, broadband, Council tax). And when do i do it:- once have moved in or do i call up before hand (once i have my completion date).

Thank you for any hlpf you give

Answers:
Gas - take a meter reading on the day that you move in. If its a card/key meter then you'll need to check that the previous tenant haven't left a 'debt' on the meter. If they have then call them to have it wiped off.

Electricity- as gas

Phone/Internet - if by some chance he previous tenants have left you a working phone line then contact the company immediately to tell them just to ensure that you dont end up with someone else's bill. Its worth shopping about phone companies for the best deal for you.

Council Tax
Water Rates/sewage rates

Contact these two/three the moment you move in because not paying them can land you in jail. If you have a water meter take readings. Depending on what part of the country you've moved to you may have to pay separate water and sewage rates.

Television License
£1000 fine if you're caught watching Tv without one. If you had one at your previous address get it changed over. If not its also worth knowing that TV licensing do an easy entry scheme that you can pay weekly at a paypoint outlet. It costs about a fiver a week to start with because you have to pay a whole years license in 6 months but then they reduce it.

Buildings inurance/house contents insurance

If not included in your mortgage

you can do it anytime hun, good luck
well get some furniture.. before you get things you dont need...
when you have your completion date you can set it up for then although gas and electric are unlikely to be disconnected. Jjust take a meter reading when you get in and give them a ring
when you move in take readings of your gas and electric meters then you are only paying for your usage not the previous owners. at the same time inform every one else ie council tax, water rates, dont forget to start your house insurance for contents on the same day.good luck with your move xx
bourght?
gas and electric just needs name swapping ..u can leave the other stuff until ure ready if u want ..but remember if u do u will have back pay to pay back ..best fing is move in 1st then go from there ..good luck
council tax will happen automatically I'm pretty certain the solicitor acting on your behalf will notify the council, but its no harm to get letters set up to notify the following
local authority (rates)
water company
electricity/gas companies

if you are moving from an existing rented property in your name then you probably need to tell those companies you are moving, so they can bill you for the stuff used in your current property.

telephone and / or broadband can be a problem
some broadband suppliers insist that you have to use a specific telephone line (eg BT), others may insist you use cable, some may require special equipment at the exchaneg.... so its possible you may have to get a new line fitted.. if thats the case check the existing property has the telephone service you require.. if not give notice to your supplier that you need to get it fitted.

theoretically broadband can be changed at the drop of a hat, but some suppliers play cute little games, it can take some time to get set up. again it may be wise to get your supplier to check that the existing facilities can support broadband, and if they have nay problems in connecting you to the network
Congratulations on your first place, how exciting!

Don't wait until you have moved in or you won't have utilities if the previous owners have scheduled a cut off date for the electricity, water, gas, etc. It's best to call and schedule it for your move in and/or closing date as soon as you know your completion date. As soon as you have your closing date schedule it right away especially for gas, electricity, etc.
If you tell the companies the date you are moving in then the things you require will be there when you move
well if this is your first home and you did not have no items in your name that you need to transfer e.g tele or any other then you will have to decide who you want to provide your wants and it best to go for package deals like all 3 for 40 pounds with tv telephone broadband and mobile from virgin normally ntl or sky or bt .your counil tax forms are normally dealt with at the council office best to get that done ASAP from you have done this you will see the only difficult thing is to decide which room to make out in first good luck in you new home and hope you find things much better than b4 and best wishes for the future .
