A gardening Question.?

Question:Hi guys,

Am in a real newby to gardens and need a bit of help. I have a garden it it seems I have an infestation of what look like small black bugs. I don't know what its called but I can describe it to you:

Basically ,they don't climb the plans or sit on leaves like many garden pest I have read about, they are mainly in the soil and seem to hide from direct sunlight, so that if you disturb the area, they run for their lives almost.

They are black in colour, and look like they have 6 to 8 legs and are a bit woody looking on top. Does anyone know what they are called and how to get rid of them?

Please help.., anm very fond to get my garden growing really well, but am truly a newby at this.

Thanks in advance :)

Answers:
The sound like fruit flys, get some citronella outdoor candles, they smell like lemons to humans but most bugs cannot stand them!

Hey newby, your bugs that scatter everywhere when you move the soil seem to be your old basic water bugs. They like fertile, moist soil and multiply there.

They really don't hurt anything, but I would trying to replenishing my soil with new soil and laying mulch on top. Ask your local garden center what would be the best topical treatment for your garden with the plants you have in it now. Happy Gardening!
sounds like you may have what is called the evil weevil. here is a site that might help. good luck
They are swabian bugs Try chemical warfare on them
could be aphids get your self some ladybirds they will gobble them up for you,
A reasonable rule of thumb us:

The slow ones eat the plants and the fast ones eat the slow ones.

It sounds as though yours are the good guys. Try to catch some and then take them to a garden centre for advice on how to deal with them.
If these critters are avoiding the light, then it is quite likely that they are these evil weevils. We had all our plants nibbled on the leaves, and bought some nematodes and that got rid of them. Just keep the area moist, and see that the temperatures are right, and make sure to repeat the procedure next year to catch those that were still larvae this year. You will find them at night, sitting on the leaves and crawling up the plants and biting semi circles out of the edges of the leaves. The larvae attack the roots. Check a picture on:

Sounds like the typical black ground beetle (Pterostichus melanarius) found commonly in gardens and farmland where it preys on aphids, caterpillars, wire-worms, slugs and other pests (actual size 12-18 mm long).
This is beneficial to the gardener, so don't squash it.
Look it up on the web.
