Does burning candles cause mold?
Question:Someone told my mom that if you burn them too often they cause mold to grow in your house and i was wondering if that's true?
Answers:
Mold is a fungus that needs moisture and nutrients. Burning candles would contribute neither of these, so no, I can't see how that would contribute to mold. There is a site concerning mold and their causes ...
http://www.gotmold.ws/factsaboutmold.htm...
and they go into detailed description of what the causes are and how to avoid them.
Good luck ;)
No way. What causes mold to grow is moisture and worm still places.
It`s possible...but that would depend on how many you burn at a time and how sm/lg the area, and the ventilation. Candles are made of paraffin, of which a large portion is water. Believe it or not, one of the by-products of combustion (the flame) is water. In this case, condensation. I don`t think she has anything to worry about , though, unless she is burning a lot of candles at once, with no open ventilation.
I agree with Squire Will. He gets my 10 points!
you need moisture to create molds. candles burn up the oxygen in the air and deplete the moisture since it creates heat. The black they see from the candles is the smoke debris which is called carbon burned off from the candle wax wick.
Whoever told you mom that probably didn't trim their wicks often or short enough. If you don't trim your candle wicks properly, the candles will create more soot. That soot will travel through the air, into your A/C, and leave a black residue on the area around your vent, which looks like black mold.
Maybe what they thought was mold is just the black soot that some candles give off. It will show up on wall or ceiling. That's why people like to use soy candles - they burn clean.
