Adding central air conditioning?

Question:My sister and I just rented a house for college. The house has central heating. Approximately how much would it cost to get air conditioning added to it? Would there have to be an entirely new unit put in?

How much it costs to run depends on how well the place is insulated, how big it is, and how cool you set the temperature.
I would just get a window unit of about 1 ton (12,000 BTU) capacity. That can be run off one 20 amp 120V circuit.

I would not recommend doing this with a house that you are only renting. When you move, the unit stays. Central air can be a bit of an expense, and yes, a new unit will need to be installed.
