Are people moaning to much about fortnightly bin collections?

Question:I think it is a typical case of people overreacting. we have had fortnightly collections for over two years and don't have a problem with it, we very rairly fill our black bin. People are just lazy and can't be arsed to do there bit and recycle. I bet if you looked through the rubbish of the moaners half of it would be recyclable. I no it's more work but you get used to it, there are more important things to worry about.

Answers:
Our local council issued three bins. The grey bin is collected fortnightly on its own and contains rubbish that would ordinarily go to land fill or have the least amount of recycling applied to it.

The blue and brown bins are for recycling and compostable waste respectively. They are collected fortnightly also - alternate weeks to the grey bin.

I'm happy to say that I hardly fill the grey bin but I tend to fill up the blue bin more although I am careful to buy products with less packaging where possible.

And all my garden waste disappears as well...

It's all about learning to live differently. It's time for change and it's better to get into the habit now rather than wait for the government to force the issue and get caught with the wrong rubbish and face a big fine. If more stuff was recycled, the councils would not have to fill as many land fill areas, Brussels would not be handing out huge fines for non-compliance (Back off Brussels!) and the council tax won't shoot up to deal with all the extra work recycling as it will already be done.

For those of you arguing that you should only pay half your council tax for half collections ... your council tax is not wholly spent on dustbin collection... it covers quite a few things.

You might be lucky to get a 3% reduction in your council tax bill.

Which government department do you work for I wonder ?
Because people that have children in nappies get maggots in there bins.
Where else you ment to put them?
I recycle yet my bin is full everyweek, so all I want to know is where am I to put my rubbish for the second week if they bring in the two week collection, in the street's!! seriously please give me advice on where to put it !! :)
And I bet you have a gold-plated-Labour-funded-pens... too. When do you retire,55?!.
I recycle anyway so it wouldn't make a huge difference to me. It would mean putting out the same amount of rubbish as I would in a week if I didn't recycle. I agree that it is bone idle people who don't recycle. I have the seperate bags in the cupboard under my stairs and it doesn't take a second to put everything in the right ones! If supermarkets stopped selling meat etc in non recyclable plastic packages, I'd barely throw out any black bag waste.
I think it is very unfair that everyone gets the same size bin no matter how many live in the house, I mean of course a family with children is going to need to throw out more stuff that a couple or single person! There should be an option to have fewer or more bins depending on how many people there are.
I think you will find that more people are moaning about the problems that could arise with rats / insects / pests etc. My grouse is actually to do with the fact that I pay my council tax for a collection every week, I am quite happy to accept it twice a week if they half my council tax. Is that not only fair?
Absolute nonsense.

If you have kids you have nappies and all kinds of waste on a constant basis... With weekly collections we still have to take trips to the tip ourselves every other week.

We hardly have a moment to spare to recycle but we still do and we try to buy products with minimal packaging that is biodegradeable. I studied pollution control as part of my chemical engineering degree and I understand very well the need to recycle and subscribe greatly to it.

However it is not possible for many families and it will put peoples health at risk. We will see a rise in vermin and pests and ultimately people will get ill and maybe even die as a consequnce.
The reality of this situation is that a minority of people are going to start dumping there house hold rubbish on street corners which already happens in London, which means that the rest of us will have to pay more money to get this removed then it would to run the extra collection in the first place.

In terms of recycling It would be good for people to read up on it because a lot of people involved with the helping the environment believe that it really does little good.

I have been reading up on composting,
anything organic in origin can be composted I have been doing this for the past two months, It does not smell and does not attract vermin, you could even compost the baby poo provided you were not planning to plant veg in your compost. if the compost is mixed with paper or card bard it does not smell and there is no need to turn. I know it sounds a bit alien to us and not hygienic but environmentally it is the best solution it just shows how far removed from nature we are.

Read up on it it saves time in the long run and I can assure you it does not smell or attract rodents. You will be very surprised at the amount of stuff that can be composted and do good for the environment rather than damaging.

The government don't give a **** about the planet they are just in getting there funding from the big conglomerates to keep there cushy jobs.
yes, I have had a fortnightly collection since I got my blue bin just over a year ago and due to having the blue bin for recyclable items I no longer need the green bin to be emptied so often.
I cant imagine how much rubbish these people who moan must be throwing out because I thought my household produced a lot.
The whole idea of fortnightly collections is to encourage people to waste less and recycle.
To some extent yes.

Although i do wonder why i've now got a brown bin for garden waste and my normal bin only gets emptied once a fortnight.

I own a farm, what on earth am i supposed to do with a normal sized brown bin !! The grass and leaves off one tractor tyre wouln't even fit in that bin. Total waste of time, i don't need it, waste of plastic and resourced in making it.

Why did the council assume that i used my normal bin for garden waste before, and now that i have a brown bin, my normal bin dfoes not need emptying so often. No real logic to it.

Personally, i think people should be encouraged to buy less, not recycle more.
