Is landlord lying?

Question:I moved into an apartment and within 2 months I spotted a roach and after that they began to multiply. I surveyed the apartment and noticed that there were crackseverywhere, I mean everywhere. Shortly after the roach problem I spotted mice running from the vents into the closet. The landlord says this apartment has been vacant for at least a year and there has been no roach or mice problem but I can clearly see that there are at least 4 large mice holes inside of my apartment, and 2 very large rat holes in front of the building, and there are cracks everywhere, and all of this was here when I moved in . There are even mice that run on top of the celing. I guess he is implying that I have bought the roaches and mice. My place is clean and I have never expereinced a roach problem since I moved in this city 12 years ago, this is my first roach problem. I have even noticed that the neighbors leave their trash in front of their doors. Do you think the roaches and mice have been here?

Answers:
So grosse.
They have been there for ever and a day.
Talk to your neighbours and see if they have the same problem.
It is up to your landlord to take the appropiate action.
Preferably asap.
Good luck.

yeah. pretty much.

of course your landlord isn't going to admit that there is a mice/roach problem... that'd be bad for business.
DEFINITELY!!
yes, but it's a buyer beware world out there. You are partially at fault right? You said the rat holes , the trash outside, and the cracks and mice holes in your apartment were there when you moved in...and you still moved in. He's got your money and you signed a contract so unless there is a strict no pet policy you're probably stuck. You might want to go to the local health department and file a complaint. It might not be much but it may help you get out of the contract in the end.
You are getting lied to. So what to do about it. Ask him to get an exterminator. If he refuses, file a complaint with your local health department. Then get a couple tubes of caulk and the cans of spray foam they sell at HD or Lowes. Then start sealing all the cracks and provide him with a receipt for the cost and ask for reimbursement. Probably won't happen but worth a try. Once you are sealed, get traps for the rodents that may still be inside the place and bomb the hell out of the place with the aerosol cans you set off and leave. This will kill whatever bugs are inside and hopefully your sealing job keeps new ones out.
you need to take care of the problem and stop worrying about whose fault it is. Try to be a happy tenant and be nice to the landlord.
If the neighbors leave trash, they are attracting the roaches and mice. They didn't just show up when you did. You can either report it to the city, or buy roach traps and rat traps. Ask the landlord to fill the holes in your apartment. Sounds like he just doesn't want to deal with it. That is a health violation. Do something soon or you will be infested with rodents.
