How do I measure how big (in gallons) my trash container is?
Question:My suburb has a limit on how big of a trash container you can have for when the garbage people come. Since it's not labeled anywhere on my trash container I am trying to figure out how many gallons it has so I can buy another one.
Answers:
fill it with water and work from there 8uk pints to a gallon not sure for the us
You can take the measurements and give the problem to a good mathematician to solve or you can take a measuring jug and fill it up to the gallon mark and pour into the trash container until it is full.
Call up and get the gallon limit. Then go to the store and they will all say how many gallons they are on the label, get the correctly sized one.
Most outdoor trash cans are 33 gal. If you go to the hardware store to buy, they will have listed how many gallons their cans are for inventory's sake.
For the math nerds out there:
Take it to the gas station and fill it up with regular, then divide the price you pay by the cost per gallon and viola!..(I am kidding of course)
An alternative method would be to measure the diameter (D) of the middle of your trash can and its height (H) and calculate the volume:
3.14 (0.5D squared) X H divide by 231 = gallons ie.
3.14 (0.5 18in squared) X 30 in divide by 231 = 33 gallons
check your neighbors and go from there
