So far, the advice you've been given is good GENERAL care, however that same advice MAY be harmful if you are applying it to the wrong species of tree. Hundreds of species of trees are made into the bonsai form, and you must know how to take care of that particular species. Yes - they need regular pruning (including root pruning), it would be well worth getting the RHS Bonsai book (there is a small one for about a fiver) which will guide you through Bonsai care including pruning, shaping & feeding.
Bonsai is ALL about special care!
First, do NOT buy any in Home Depot, etc., that comes with glued soil. This is unnatural and not favorable to your plant at all. That is why you don't see them thriving anywhere. Also, they are poor cuttings that aren't even worth to be called bonsai.
Bonsai needs to be in well draining, moisture retaining soil. A good soil mix for it is very gritty, and coarse. It does not look anything like your typical potting soil! Depending on how hot the day is, your bonsai may need to be watered more than twice a day! And then the trimming and prunning is another skill you need to develop.
Impossible? Not at all! Maybe a little tough in the beginning. But your best bet is to find your local bonsai club and join it!
