Why does my apartment get hot at night?

Question:I live on the 3rd floor of a 9-story bldg in Manhattan. It gets significantly hotter inside as the night goes on, which seems counterintuitive. Before you ask: Yes, I run the a/c at night, and no, it's not the "activities" of the tenants heating things up...

Answers:
I imagine your building is made of brick or concrete. The outside material allows the daylight to be absorbed throughout the day and it takes a long time for the heat to pass through the material to the other side being the inside of your apartment. also all the lightbulbs that are lite below you are heating the ceilings of the other apartments hence your floor is collecting all the heat from two floors and transfering it to the ceiling above you. Good thing you have a a/c unit.

Most likely your building is absorbing heat from the sun and the surrounding air throughout the day, and it takes time for that heat to work its way through the walls and into the apartments. I have had the same experience in my condo, even though it is on the east side of the building, away from the afternoon sun.
Heat rises.
Are your walls getting hit with the evening sun?
Just think of how hot the floors above you must be.
