Thumbs up to Ron's answer. This site describes how to identify your problem and usage of the traps. I use traps at my home to control the wasps we have.
If you dont want to use chemicals you can use dishsoap and water and pick each one of the beetles in flick them into the bucket. Or you can use a product called Sevin. Which will control just about any insect. The beetles are harmless to you and me, but as you can see they are devistating to your landscape. And look closely they are cool looking.color wise. But you will see alot of them on top of one another. That means they are mating, soon they will lay their eggs in the soil, which will turn into grubs that will feed on the roots of your lawn. That wont be seen till the end of august into sepetermber. And where they lay there eggs is anyones guess, they look for nice thick healthy moist soil. So do your part in taking care of your lawn.
At the home improvement store they sell Bag-A-Bug.It is a bag with a sex lure and stand. You put it out on the edge of your property and the beetles are attracted to it,go into the bag which has poison in it,then they die in the bag.Easy to use and easy clean up.
I suggest you use Malathion. It mixes with water and you use a pump sprayer. If you use Sevin it is harmful to the birds and butterflies. We've lost a lot of bees, let's not do in any more good things. I have a huge garden and I have just used it. Those bags tend to bring more bugs to your yard with the scent.
