you mean the sort of stove with legs on? No but there are build regulations to the thickness of the floor and how much they must extend beyond the size of the stove.
mainly relating to fire regs. and radiating heat. It might also need building regs notification with the council.http://www.stovesonline.co.uk/stove-hear...

you cant just put tiles on top of floor boards, it needs to be thicker than that or on concrete floor.
most home building supply stores can help you find what you need. when we just redid the hearth of our fireplace, we used slate as it has different colors/textures. we broke it up and did a mosiac and it turned out fabulous!
get your tile supplies at either a home depot/menards type store or go to a fireplace store and talk with them about what options are available. natural stone would probably be best
anywhere there is extra heat it probably would be better to get heat resistant tiles and they would save you having to change if you opt for ordinary ones .
I had a cast iron burner put in my last flat. As I didn't have much money, I went for small paving slabs! This was O.K.'d by the builder installing it. Important thing is to make sure the legs are level and the installation instructions are followed re. the gaps around the burner etc.
I was really pleased with my little slabs, and designed a simple arrangement for them. They looked great, really rustic and in keeping with the fire. No problem with coping with the heat either, 'cos boy, do those burners give off some heat!
