Painted fireplace?
Question:My fireplace is painted white on the inside. we didn't do this, the previous homeowners did and I hate it. I want to remove the paint and make the fireplace usable again. Whats the safest way to do this? I don't want to accidentally burn my house down. I am already planning on having the inside of the chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional before using it.
Answers:
If it's not flame resistant paint, just start a fire. It should, safely, just burn off. Or, ask the chimney sweep when he comes.
Lay down plenty of plastic sheeting, and be prepared to work hard. Use paint removers and wire brushes. It's a filthy job You could sandblast, but that is too messy.

Once inspected and ready, start a fire in it, don't worry it is made to do this. For the paint that remains, you will have to either sand blast, these can be rented, or go through paint paint remover, Citristrip is less obnoxious than most.
i would say you cant do anyhting if its brick. maybe sand blast but then you will have sand all over your house. you cant seal it out no matter what you do. thinners and such would not be a good idea... you might have to take the masonry down and haev it done again. i would say just that takes away value to your home. i hope you got a discount because of this.
sandblast the paint off.NO PAINT THINNERS because they are unsafe. Have a proffesional do the sandblasting
I believe sand blasting, or power washing is the best way. However, I have never tried it indoors. It should be fine on the inside of the fireplace, though. Maybe go to where you would purchase, or rent a machine, and ask them. Good luck!
The previous owners were no too bright. The best advice I have is to put a layer of concrete or mortar over the paint. That is probably the safest and easiest method.
Talk to any Home Center, Hardware or Paint Store for the best options for the Type of Paint used. You might not Know exactly, since you didn't paint it, but they can ask few Questions, and can figure something out.
There are Professionals who can do More than that, such as Sandblasting, but this might be Expensive. Might be able to find a few in the Phone Book, or Online.
The Inspection sounds like a Great Idea, the Inspector might be able to Suggest a few things too.
