I just got a few shocks from my electric mixer.?

Question:The mixer was plugged in but not turned on and it was standing on a wet towel with some wet napkins on the top. I touched the wet napkins and I got a huge shock. I also touched some prongs that were also sitting on top of the wet towel under the mixer. What I don't understand is that the mixer was plugged in but not turned on - does the mixer have a short in it?

Answers:
Somewhere inside your appliance, a bare wire is probably touching the metal housing or framework. You'll need to take it to an appliance repair shop or throw it away and buy a new one. This is a serious safety hazard.

Also, your kitchen needs to have GFCI (ground fault circuit interupt) outlets installed. These outlets provide an added layer of safety by shutting off if it senses any grounding other than the neutral wire. A qualified electrician should be able to do this for you in under an hour. Money very well spent!

Probably a bad cord. Winding the cord around the mixer wears them out.
Water and electricity do not mix. Any appliance, plugged in, should be kept away from water. Perfectly safe radios and heaters have killed a lot of people when they fell into bathwater.
