Growing squash, when is it ready?

Question:I have been growing squash and I have taken some off bc they were pretty big, and others bc they were super yellow. How do I know when theyre ready? Is it by size or color?

Answers:
I grow squash and the best length to harvest them is when they are about 6-9 inches in length. Some can be slightly longer. The squash is edible when the skin is still soft. Color is not that reliable to indicate the squash being ready. Squash will turn orange for yellow squash but by then, it is way too late to eat. Zucchini stays green even when the skin is hard and the flesh is woody and seedy.

what kind?

summer squash pick them small
this will produce more fruits

winter squash pick at full size when the rind is hard and have a deep solid color

TO ALL THIS IS A GREAT SITE FOR MANY VEGETABLES
