How can I control mosquitos around my house without spending a fortune?

put up some bat houses, they love mosquitos, and you will be helping the bats, too. They eat lots of irritating insects.
First, make sure that there is no standing water around your house. It is a breeding ground for them. Next, there are candles at a reasonable price that you can burn while outside. A bug zapper works, but it only works at night.
I am having the same problem. It has continually rained for months where I live. I checked the products at the garden stores, but was unable to find anything safe to use.
I bought an insect repellant to spray on anyone going into my backyard. (Cutter "Skinsations" it does have deet) Also, my dog is current on heartworm medication.
Mosquito donuts. They are not really expensive and will control the ones in the water and you can also break these into fourths depending on the size of the water area. My husband and I have been using these for about 5 years now, although we still have problems with mosquito's in our area, but at least we do our part.
You should be able to pick these up at any farm or garden supply or even some hardware stores carry them too.

Getting rid of the standing water may help, but even eliminating tjhe standing water from your property may not help much if the surrounding properties also have standing water. A fairly inexpensive solution is to go and buy OFF brand PowerPad lanterns. Some research has shown the allethrin chemical released when the candle is burning is pretty good at repelling mosquitoes. Each lantern is good for 15X15 ft. It might be advisable to buy a couple for your back yard. Ligh the candle approximately 15-30 minutes before you plan to spend time outside.
