Does anybody know of a way to rid my yard of mosquitos without using harsh chemicals?
Question:I don't have any standing water in my yard and can't understand why I have so many mosquitos, but when you walk through the grass they fly up in swarms as though you're in the deep woods. I heard that ammonia sprayed on the grass will get rid of them, but it hasn't worked and I don't want to use expensive, harsh chemicals like yard guard. Does anybody know any proven home remedies for this?

Check into this CO2 machine you set in your yard to attract & kill mosquitos. They are reasonably priced and come in different sizes. Hope it helps. Here's a web site you can use...

hmmm.. that is wierd. is your yard like damp? is there an underground leak somwhere in the yard? and are you sure it is mosquitos. i have never heard of this. you need to get a couple of pet lizards, or frogs and let them loose in the yard . I am sure that would help. have you tried lighting citronella candles??
wish you luck..
My back yard is the same way.. intrested to see what answers you get.
Are you sure those are mosquitoes? Usually they don't wait for you to walk through the grass to come get you. Maybe cutting your grass a little lower will help. Spraying is pointless anyway because new ones will just fly in.
If you live in the suburbs your town may use retention basins to control storm waters. Unfortunately this provides mosquitoes excellent opportunities to breed. Contact local health officials to determine the origin. Be sure to describe it as a problem. Mosquitoes rarely travel more than 50 yards from their place of birth.
Poke very small holes in a balloon, blow it up and put it somewhere where away from people. Mosquitos are attracted to co2 and will gather around the balloons and get trapped inside of it causing them to suffocate because no oxygen is getting in.
Set out small dishes with just LEMON scented dish soap in it.
marigolds keep them away and are pretty too
you can scatter (distribute?) a small amount of wood ash on the grass. It's good for grass' growth, doesn't smell (ammonia does!) and kills mosquito's larvae and mosquitos as adults (less). Good luck!
mosquitos feed on plant juices until they - the females mate and then they prey on blood. That is why you have so many of them. Mosquitos love areas with no air movement. A simple fan can keep them away easily, Sometimes pruning a larger tree to allow more air movement will help keep them away
Rosemary, citronella and lemongrass are all supoosed to deter them. Maybe you could try an oil of one of them and mix with some water and spray. We used orange oil a lot in our greenhouse at school but I'm not sure if it killed mosquitos. The oil of orange is supposed to be pretty strong.
