It looks like it's a Western Grapeleaf Skeletonizer. They generally eat, not surprisingly given the name, grape leafs. You can check the link below for some info on them and a better picture to see if that's what they are. The entry on the web page is a few down from the top, or you can use the "find" function on your browser to locate it.
I'm not sure what the butterfly will look like or what it's called though. I'll keep looking and if I find out I'll edit this post and let you know. :)
EDIT: Found the adult form of the "Grapeleaf skeletonizer" but I'm not sure if it'll look like the *Western* Grapeleaf skeletonizer that you seem to have. I would think they'd look similar but probably not identical. Anyway, the adult form is at the second link below.
Good luck!
sorry ofr the spelling
cadapeller??
i think
caterrpillers
This caterpillar is a Western Grape Leaf Skeletonizer, Harrisina brillians. They are a major defoliating pest of grapes and will not spread to your other trees. If they are numerous, they will completly strip a vineyard of leaves. This will not kill the vines, but it will not be a good year for grapes. They will not poison your pets.
The web site is wonderful for identifying almost ANY bug in the country, not just caterpillars. Take a minute to look, you'll be amazed! I was ;o)
They look like Western Grape Leaf Skeletonizer caterpillars.
This is what your caterpillar turns into. Yuk http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/pmg/h/i-lp-hb...
