How do I get the USPS mailbox replaced?
Question:We just moved into a new house, and instead of having a mailbox in front of everyone's house, there's a large one down the street where we all get out mail, using our individual keys. The problem though, is that the slot for each person is way too small, anything that gets delivered gets crumpled up, and by the time you get it, it has a permanent crease down the middle. To add to that, there's no large box at the bottom of the unit to allow for packages to arrive. I don't know what's going to happen next time I order something from an online retailor and it's too big to fit in the little box that's assigned to us. On top of all of that, the unit has aged and looks quite ugly now.
Is it possible to get USPS to replace the mailbox with a newer version, with bigger slots? Is there some sort of form I could get the neighbors to sign perhaps? Any information of the topic would be appreciated!
Answers:
It is not the US Post Office's job to replace your mail box.
Check your covenants, it is probably either your or your
home owner association's responsibility.
Contact the post office that serves your neighborhood. They might refuse to allow you to put up your own box, but I would definately put some pressure on them.
I would suggest calling your local post office and voice your concern to them. They may tell you that you and all your neighbors have to go together and buy one. They would give you a better answer though, as I live in the boonies and have my own personal mailbox.
first, you go the the post office to pick up the package. no, you, probably, can't get it replaced. you could try getting everyone's signature on a petition to have it updated, but the PO may require you to pay all or part of the cost.
good luck
I have an association in my neighborhood, and they provide the mailboxes. When I moved in, it was a new 4-plex with a rack stlye mailstand with regular mailboxes. But the mailboxes got damaged, so the association went to the steel boxes with the keys. I believe if you got all the home owners to agree via petition, you could get it changed, but at your cost. The USPS delivers to an address, but from what the association said it is the address's obligation to provide a place for mail to be delievered. Different areas have different regulations. So if all agree, for a nominal cost, you could buy the box and let the USPS key them.
