have you tried out Freecycle? there are freecycle scheames across the country and globe where people wll give away items for free which they have/want to get rid of.
recently i had a table and 4 chairs excellent condition the owner was moving over seas.
just type in Freecycle, and you should find some information, or add your town name to the search. I am linked to the Reading Freecycle which accepys my FindHomeAnswers password and ID as it is also run by Yahoo. i don't know if they are all Yahoo or not.

possibly your local council or social services. not free but reasonable is second hand shops or auction rooms, good luck

your 1st answer has it right. we have been signed up on freecycle for a while now you should see the things people no longer want and give away rather than fill out dwindling land fill sites
