My golden retriever...?

Question:I live in Arizona, so it gets really hot during the summer, and my dog gets really hot, and digs holes in the backyard. He has lots of water and stuff out there, but that doesn't help a hole lot. We tried to keep him in the house during the afternoon, but he refuses to come in until like 7:00 because theres to much going on. We got him from the animal shelter, and was abused at his previous home. We've tried kiddy pools, a mister...any ideas??

Answers:
My dog had the same problem. What I did was I scolded him. Dogs understand human language. I take my dog inside and give her a nice cool shower. Try doing that! It might help. Or just calm it down with treats.

GET A POOL!
Sometimes when it's hot out I give my golden retriever
'Frosty Paws', it is like a popsicle for dogs. I get mine from Wal-Mart during the summer.
Have you heard of Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer? His show is on National Geographic and is awesome. You can also pick up his book, but I think it's easier to see it in action.

You can get your dog to obey you - you need to be pack leader, by using a calm, assertive method.

If he must be outside, be sure he has shade, and plenty of water which you're already doing. A sprinkler might be fun, but other recommendations for a pool are great - one of those plastic kiddie pools is perfect - you say you tried it, did you work with him to get used to going in to it?

Seriously though, check out the Dog Whisperer, you won't be sorry!

Good luck!
Ever thought about shaving him. At least if he stays outside hopefully he will be cooler with less hair. My lab doesn't like the hose or kiddy pools either. Make sure there is some shade for him to lie in. Hope this helps. I do know of some retrievers that have been shaved in the summer. They end up looking like labs.
Shaving him is a great idea! My sister has her retriever mix shaved about twice a month. She still looks pretty, but I'm sure that she's much cooler! Be careful after the first shave though, the sun may give her a bit of a sunburn.
