Cant see there would be any guidlines. Loads of people keep chicken. Only thing might be that you must not let them stray.
I don't know if Central Government has anything to do with this. It will be in the deeds to your property. Go to your solicitor and ask to see them. It should mention somewhere if you can keep chickens, pigs etc. Where I live it says in the deeds quite plainly no chickens. I know this sounds weird but that's what it says.
I dont think they have any rules, personally whenever tesco have 2 chickens for a fiver I buy in bulk and fill the freezer with at least half a dozen and no-one has ever said anything.
There is provision within the Town Planning regulations which permits the erection of a building (subject to siting, size and height limitations) in a garden for "a purpose incidental to the enjoyment of the dwellinghouse" and this includes the keeping of poultry, bees, pet animals, birds or other livestock for the domestic needs or personal enjoyment of the occupants of the dwellinghouse.
The only things you have to be careful of is noise (cockerels and the like) and health issues (take the muck away) as your neighbours could complain.
Hi, I kept chickens for a while and all I was told I had to do was write to the local council and tell them how many I was keeping and the size of the pen. They were fine with it. If you get permission first at least your covered if anyone complains. oh yes! cockerels are out unless you live on a farm away from other houses. Good luck and enjoy those fresh eggs.
At one time, if you wished to keep livestock you had to seek permission from your local Council. Give them a call and see if this rule still applies cos I'm going back some years. Good luck.
