Why does my smoke alarm keep going off when there's no smoke?

Question:I was awoken at 5, 5.20, 5.45 and 6.00 this morning by the smoke alarm going off downstairs. The problem is it is also connected to the main alarm system to the house so I'm not exactly up for neighbour of the month award. It is connected to the mains with a back-up battery. We were not on fire and there was no source of smoke or heat at that time. What could be the problem?

Hi Jacg.

I suspect all the above answers are wrong. A low battery backup wil result in a regular tone, normally a blip every 5 minutes. So its not that.

I bet you have the more sensitive sensors ( non-ionising type) . these are better but can also result in false alarms. The reason they are better is that as well as looking for smoke they look for dust particles ( because fire causes dust )

So, i bet its dust dropping into the unit from the void in the ceiling. Take the alarm off, hoover it out, tape over any holes going into the ceiling with electrical insulation tape.

It needs a new one.
i was going to say the battery may be going flat but you said your connected to the mains. i would get someone to look at it as it could do with a service
Maybe you pong.
sounds like youhave a short somewhere, get it checked out before your neighbors do set your house on fire.
Its normally does that when the battery is low on power, they have to have a separate battery in case of power cuts.

Change the battery in the unit !.
it may be the battery is low or the circuit is faulty.
first change a new battery and if it still goes off, have it check by a qualified person.
Had this trouble when council modernised our home.
They came out to them, said it was a faulty cheap batch
that were faulty and most of them that were fitted had to be removed, now never have any bother with new ones.
It could be the battery, even those that are hard wired often will let you know when/if the battery is low by making a short chirp. If it is "going off" meaning more then just a brief chirp then it is probably not the battery. If not the battery it could be a short in a wire as one suggested. Lastly if it is more than just a smoke alarm (meaning one that detects CO2 or heat then) maybe it did detect something.

If a battery change doesn't fix it then you should probably contact whoever your alarm company is, or if you do not have a current one (the system was just put in with no additional contract) then see what the manufacturer is on the smoke alarm and do a google search for any similar reported problems.
Set your alarm clock for 4.55, 5.15, 5.40, and 5.55 tomorrow. When you wake up you will have enough time to turn off your power supply for your house, and thus prevent any annoyance to your neighbours.
grounded sensors. have it checked.
need a new battery thats all .
battery needs replacing
personely,i think it is the battrey.
It´s not perhaps someone showering so hot that the steam sets it off?
