How do I switch from Baqausil to chlorine.?
Question:We used Baquasil for the last 2 years. It is way to expensive to run and very difficult to keep the levels in the correct range. Our pool was always dirty no matter what we did or how many chemicals we put in it last year.
Our pool is a 24" round and 4 1/2 feet deep. We have a sand filter.
Answers:
Here's the procedure to switch:
Stop using the product now and wait until the levels are close to 0
Shock the pool with an oxidizing shock product (NOT a chlorine product)
Chemically clean the sand filter with a Baquacil stripper or change the sand completely
Shock the pool again with an oxidizing shock product
Add chlorine gradually in an attempt to build up the levels to 3-5ppm over the course of a week or so. If you have problems getting the chlorine to raise then you are going to have to stop adding chlorine until the level drops to 0 and repeat the above steps again. Rinse, repeat ad nauseum until you are able to maintain chlorine in the pool.
Now the easier way:
Stop using the product until it reads 0
Use a Baquacil stripper for the sand filter
Drain off the water but leave 6-8" in the bottom of the pool so that the liner remains in shape.
Shock this water with non chlorine shock. And stir the water every few hours for the first day.
Add chlorine (3 gallons of household bleach of the non-scented type) and begin filling the pool
Unfortunately you are probably going to have problems with your pool for the first month or so after switching, this is because baguanides and chlorine do NOT play nicely together. Until you get all the crud out of your filtration lines and any residue out, the Baquacil is going to continue to work against the chlorine.
