Can someone tell me what the difference is between a serger and sewing machine?
Question:I want to learn how to sew but have never gotten a clear explanation on what the difference is between the two. Thanks.

A serger cuts the fabric, then it serges the ends. If you turn your shirt inside out, and look at the seam, not the bottom of your shirt, but along the sides, you'll see stiching that keeps your shirt from unraveling along the edges. A serger does that, a regular sewing machine just sews the seam and you can do what you want with the excess (seam allowance). Sergers are more expensive and I've never gotten to use one, but believe they are more complicated. If you are just starting out... buy a regular machine.
A serger only finishes a hem so that it won't unravel. If you look like on the inside seam of a skirt or dress pants you will see a wide band of zig zag stitches on the very edge, that's what a serger does.
A sewing machine does the rest.
serger finishes a cut edge with some weird type of intertwined thread pattern, while a sewing maching will sew two or more fabrics together,
what
