How can i calculate how much i spend on a specific electrical appliance?
Question:I want to calculate how much we spend daily on a refregirator, computer, TV, etc... All these appliances say 1000W, 500W, .. so i want to know how to convert it and calculate exactly how much money we spend on electicity. please i can find my rate per KWh so it will be great if only u can tell me how to convert only. thank you
Answers:
A 1kw (1000 Watt) appliance uses maximum 1kw /hour so if the rate is 2.4p /kwh then that is the cost /hour. But a lot of appliances do not run at this power constantly eg a fridge switches on and off. So it is difficult to work out exactly. A 1kw appliance may cost less than a 500w one if the 500w one runs constantly.. On some appliances though their are efficiancy codes A, B C etc. But a rule of thumb is keep a fridge/freezer stocked almost full as this conserves energy. so if you only have 1 pack of fish fingers in the freezer fill it with ice. Turn the water temp down on a washing machine
1000 watts is a kilowatt 50 is half a kilowatt.
A 1000 watt item running for an hour would add up to one kilowatt per hour.
Easy init
have no idea if there is an easier or more scientific way, but one was would be to turn off all your electrical appliances and the just switch one on, leave for 10 minutes (for example) and measure how much electricity has been used on the meter times that by 6 to get an hour then 24 to get your day then if you know how much your rate is you can work it out from there.
If yoiu go on the BBC website they have a new thing that calculates our individual 'carbon footprint'. That way you can find out exactly what you spend !! xx
