How can I get rid of Japanese beetles in my plant?

Question:I have a flower hanging basket and Japanese beetles are killing it. The leaves of the plants are being eaten. I have tried to get rid of them but there is way too many of them. Is there something that I could put on the plant to kill the beetles and still save the plant?

Answers:
I know exactly what you are going through. I have been invaded by these nasty, destructive Japanese Beetles for the last few years.

"Sevin" is the only thing that I find that will kill these pesky bugs. Powder your plant(s) with Sevin.
If you see any, kill them. I use a small coffee can with some water and Dawn/dish detergent in the can. Flick the beetles into the can. They drowned on contact in the detergent mixture.

I also put on garden gloves and smush them to kill them. It's easier after you powder them with Sevin because it seems to stun them.

These beetles attack many kinds of plants.
They love my Hollyhocks, Rhubarb, 4 O'Clocks, Beans, even our garlic plants and today we found them munching on our Basil.
Well.that was it !! Sevin was also powdered on our basil.

It's been a uphill battle because it has been raining heavily for days now so we have to repowder most every day to keep them in check.

Get yourself some "Sevin" from your Garden Center---ASAP !!
Home Depot and Lowes carry it.

Good Luck ! :)))

I dont know much about beetles but i think you should place the flowers where the beetles cant get to them!
You can powder it with Sevin it is an insecticide in powder form. You can buy it at Wal-mart.
Japanese beetles are only out for a few weeks in the summer.. can you move the plant inside for a while?

The thing about Japanese beetles is that they will still eat poisoned plants.. they eat and eat and then die. There isn't anything that deters them from eating.

The best way to deal with the beetles is to kill them before they hatch. Use a soil insecticide in late spring to kill their grubs (larvae). This will help with mole problems, too.. moles LOVE grubs.
exterminate them.. mwah ha ha =o
Turn your hose nozzle to "mist" setting and wash the plant thoroughly, under and over, (most folks forget to mist the underside of leaves). Once you have rid the plant of the beetles, use a very mild mixture of dish soap, approximately one teaspoon per liter of water in a spray bottle and spray under and over religiously. Worked for my plants, should work for yours. P.S. Don't be afraid of using too much water the first time you wash your plant friend, just make sure it can drain well. Best of Luck.
