How do you get rid of an Ant problem in your House?

Question:I'm cleaning all the time yet they are persistent!

Answers:
Check out this website. They have suggestions from vacuuming up the ants you see and cleaning up the trails, to caulking the holes that you see (I used scotch tape) to using baits rather than a spray to kill the nest. It has a lot more detail and deals with more specifics! I just read a report that mentioned that 90% of a class of pesticides called pyrethroids are used on argentine ants in urban (city) settings. Crazy! They are so ineffective as well, baits work a heck of a lot better. Anywho, check out this site from the University of California, Davis Integrate Pest Management site. Peer reviewed and Teeeerrrrrific!

NOTE: I just read some other responses, and sprays do NOT work. They just kill what is there, and don't prevent the problems. You do NOT want to spray outside the perimeter either, especially on impervious surfaces like concrete. The stuff doesn't break down (pyrethroids don't and are the class of pesticides I mentioned above) and tends to wash eventually into stormdrains which go into your local waterbody and sit there for a really long time. Anywho, I know way too much about this as I work in pesticide regulation and have been reading up on urban pesticides... OH! and spraying your leftovers is just idiotic as you could just wash the dishes and that works a lot better. BAH

I had a problem like that last winter. I put ant traps in the vents and it seemed to work. You need to change them about once a month.

They also have a product out there by Raid or something that you can spray the perimeter of your house, inside and out, and that is supposed to help too.
Check the ant colony in your house and if you find their abode spray it with insecticide. Also, spray your leftovers with a soap solution or a bleach so they won't be attracted to it. As long as you have uncovered food in your house the ants will be there to finish it off.
Speak with your uncle about her...lol.

Keeping any foodstuffs off of counters will help. They will look for dog or cat food, too. I just wipe them away instead of spraying. If you are entertaining (or would like to without embarrassment), call an exterminator to spray the areas that they are coming from...going toward. Usually a perimeter spray outside and a light crevice spray on the inside will surfice. Look for someone whose spray is non-offensive. Some of those chemicals stink. I would rather deal with the bugs than breathe the lingering fumes after a spraying. They may need to visit once a month during the summer.

Good luck...
To get rid of ants ...find where they are coming in and pour vinegar across the whole area.ants hate it! You can test what I am saying by pouring vinegar around in a circle and and ant in the middle and he Won't cross it.
Good luck...
oh Lord I live in Florida and we have all kinds of bug problems! as for ants if they are very tiny they are called sugar ants and what I `ve done is put black pepper as close to the back bord as possable as so try to see where they are coming from and cut of the food subpplise. [not much ] keep all food out of the way in air tight contaners, also in you cabets if you have roaches or in florida a big roach is called a pomellow bug
use boric acid [in power form ] and put in a coke bottle lid and stuff it in the corner of your cabnets.belive it or not even white chulk works , a friend of mine uses it all the time [ something in it ants don`t like ] good luck...
I've had to do this three times There's an black plastic contraption where the ants go into it and bring the food back to the colony. Place it about a foot from where the ants are coming from. Within 3-5 days, I've never seen another ant in the house. It's probably made by Raid or one of those companies. You can get it in the grocery store and it really works!
product called Terro Ant Bait - they eat it and take it back to their colony. good luck!
