Wire cut and mat turned over? Someone trying to break in?

Question:I don't know if I'm crazy for freaking out, but I have my reasons. We have a mat in front of our front door, and we opened the door one time to find that the mat was turned over. And then today we went outside to do some yardwork, and we discovered that our outside wire was cut. The wire was to light up the outside christmas lights. We're kind of late to take it off. The wire was definitely not chewed up, it was cut. Isn't this kind of weird? I feel like the mat was turned over because someone might have been looking for a hidden key. The wire was cut so people couldn't see him/her. By the way, I don't live in a ghetto place. I live in a upper-middle class colonial home. Doesn't this sound creepy though? Does anyone else have reasons for why the mat was turned over and the wire cut? And, does anyone have any security procedures my family and I should do?

Answers:
Have you ruled out someone in the neighborhood playing a prank on you.

Whenever you go out make sure that all the windows and doors are locked and secure. You may want to consider installing a security system if this continues.

First of all, take the Christmas lights down. Even if you live in a "nice neighborhood" neglecting your home like that tells people that you don't care. If it is a nice neighborhood, have you thought that maybe your neighbors feel that your 7 month delay in taking down the lights makes the neighborhood look bad? Perhaps someone got tired of seeing the lights on every night.

Secondly, have you notified the police?

Finally, make sure you have good outdoor lighting (Christmas lights don't count!). Keep the bushes around your home trimmed so there's no place for potential burglars to hide. And stay on good terms with those aforementioned neighbors. Keep an eye out for each other and anything suspicious going on in the area.
Hi,
You are saying the wire was cut so you could not see him/her so by this I am assuming the lights were plugged in and working?
You may want to call a security company and have a good security system installed.
SMITH AND WESSON
My home was broken into 3 years ago!! I talked to police and they suggested a dog; just the sound of the barking will turn away would-be thieves. My insurance company told me also to get motion detector, again, would-be thieves leave when those lights come one and the dog starts barking; and less money than alarms put on your house-where all bad man has to do is cut the outside wire and presto, no bugular alarm.
