I need tips for staying cool with an evaportive (swamp) cooler as out only source of "air conditioning"
Question:This is my 1st summer in Phoenix, AZ with a swamp cooler instead of an AC. The temps are regularly 108 and getting hotter as the weeks go by. Any tips would be helpful. I'm pretty clueless about swamp coolers and it seems like from 1pm - 6 or 7 pm it's not helping as much as it should be.

I lived in Gilbert, AZ for a while. You are definately in for it with the heat! I had a swamp cooler, and hated it! Crack the window in whatever room you will be in most during that time. It will at least help the air to circulate a little bit better.
make sure you stay hydrated the human body cant produce sweat to cool you off if your dehydrated ive been deployed to the gulf twice wearing armor and standing in the full heat of the sun for hours on end is the worst heat ever (on the up side if your trying to lose weight its a good chance to break a sweat and burn some xtra cals)
You think it is bad now, just wait for the monsoons next month when the humidity starts creeping up. Do you have ceiling fans or decent oscillating fans? They help alot. Outside of that, make sure the pads on your cooler are changed a couple of times during the summer. The salt in the water out here really clogs the pads up and reduces the coolers efficency. And you might think of a window a/s for your bedroom. Not to bad dollarwise if you only run it at night.
If you have the window kind go out side and let the water hose run til cool.then spray the sides good with the water. If it sits all day the water is hot and there is only hot vapors coming out.i let mine run over a while to cool the water off on the inside.Try it it works.
