Can you improve the air quality by growing plants?
All plants “breath” carbon monoxide and other gases and emit oxygen, but a new book, How to Grow Fresh Air by B.C. Wolverton, claims some produce more than others. Sunset’s Steve Lorton reviewed the book and selected some of his favorites.
Palm trees: Although palms are a tropical plant, the Sunset Western Garden Book says many varieties are hardy throughout the West. Young palms are suitable as houseplants.
Spathiphyllum: This is one of Steve’s favorite houseplants. The leaves are dark green, slender and pointed. The plant produces a white flower similar to a calla lilly.
Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen): A tropical plant used as a houseplant. The Aglaonema has beautiful patterned leaves and thrives on very little sunlight, making it the perfect plant for indoors.
Philodendron: A tough, fast-growing plant for indoors. The vining species can provide an attractive cascade of green in an interior.
Schlumbergera (Christmas Cactus): For most of the year, this plant looks like a flat-branched cactus. But for a time each year they burst into blossom, and the brightly colored flowers make these plants look more like parrots. They can be trained to flower during December, hence the common name.
Cyclamen: A hardy, winter-blooming plant noted for its star-like blossoms.
Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchid): An orchid with large blossoms and broad leaves. The long sprays of blossoms are long-lasting.
