Hi Wolf Lover,
Sorry bout your tree here. But it is not as bad as it looks. What you have are insects or sawflies in this case causing the damage. I am copying and pasting the info from the website listed below. It is not necessary to try and control them as it does not create a danger to the health of the tree. They are unsightly though...
"Fleshy Willow Leaf Gall
These appear as thickened lumps of tissue on the leaves of several willows. They start out green in color but often turn red and brown. Several galls may be present on a single leaf. The galls are formed by a sawfly, Pontania proxima (Lepeleter), a type of primitive wasp.
The adult sawflies emerge as the willow leaves are expanding and they insert eggs into the expanding tissues. This causes the leaf tissue to swell into a chamber which nourishes and protects the developing grub. Little is known from this point on but most gall making sawflies emerge by fall and overwinter in surrounding leaf litter."
On the site you can find the info for controlling them if you feel it necessary...
Good luck...
it sounds to me like this is a possible case of drying out. this tree's habitat is usually on the shore of a lake or pond, completely accessable to a large supply of water. Willow is very susceptable to insect diseases but if you can take digital pictures of these infected branches, i can email you the email address of a teacher friend who can help you more than me. let me know if this will work for you.
There can be a number of things that are not right with it. Half you tested the soil of the tree and is there lots of bugs i would look in to that and try to find a good tree web site there has to be one ought there some ware. I love the willow trees there are my favorite tree of all of them i hope some one has the answer for you. Good luck and half fun. OO yes i do know there is a tree thing but it is called oke tree willte but i think that is only for oke trees and not willow tree i hop that it is not that you also can call you town hall and they might be able to help some how like give you a phone number some thing like that. :)
