It's always hot upstairs! Help!?

Question:My new apartment always seems to be so much hotter upstairs then downstairs even with the refridgerated air on constantly. Does anyone else have this problem with their second story and what about in the winter with heating? Any suggestions on how to cool down?

Answers:
Ask the landlord to check the eave vents and those on the roof. It could be that those vents are stuffed (bird litter stuff like that.) Bad air circulation can lead to excessive heat getting trapped in the attic, which can cause you to waste more money on the AC, etc...plus it will rot insulation, wood studs, etc. People don't think it's a big deal, but trust me...I KNOW it is..

it's hot upstairs when i'm up there
Heat rises. Nothing you can do about it. On the plus side, it will be extra warm there in winter.
try getting an attic fan. its well worth it, you turn on the fan for 5 minutes, open all your windows downstairs, and youre house will be freezing. this is only good for night time tho
Heat rises. That is why it is always hotter upstairs than down.
Keep ac on, with fans circulating the cool air throughout the upstairs.

the celling fan turned upside down.
The natural principle is that heat rises. Unfortunately, if your air conditioner isn't handling the problem, I don't know what to tell you besides get a new air conditioner, take cold showers, and leave the lights off. Maybe you need a higher powered machine to cool it off?
Hot air rises. Open a window or get electric fans.
This is normal for it to be hotter upstairs, because heat rises. In my house we have a fan that pulls in air from outside and downstairs up to make it cooler. That may be to difficult so you could install some window fans, or some fans in general.
My upstairs is warmer than my downstairs. I live in a single family house so it might be different, though. What my husband and I have done in the past that has worked fairly well is that we position a large fan at the top of the stairs so it blows the warm air downstairs where the A/C thermostat is located. That way, the house is cooled more equally throughout.
heat rises.

get one of those ventilation fans that expand t fit perfectly inside your window and have it blow the air outside.

This will suck the cooler air from downstairs up into the upstairs room and it will also cause your AC to run more.

For a cheaper resolution, ask your landlord if you can install a ceiling fan. It helps TREMENDOUSLY and will cut your cooling costs.

One more thing. keep those filters clean!

Check your AC intake filter and replace it often!

It also makes a huge difference.
In HHOOTT indoor ,s o m e t i m e s the shower, c o l d shower stays on with the bathroom door open. Refridgerated air? mean air conditioner or your=the fridge doors permitted staying open?
.
You probably have vaulted ceiling and no attic so there is minimal insulation between the roof and the air conditioned space. One option is to insulate below the ceiling with polystyrene sheets and cross ventilate your upstair area.
The thermostat is downstairs and cuts off when it senses the right temperature downstairs. The thermostat doesn't read the temperature upstairs. Outside of having a second air conditioning system installed, you might want to get a air conditioning window unit for your bedroom. The same applies for heating in the winter, you will find it colder upstairs than downstairs.
Heat rises. That's all. If your apartment is thouroughly insulated, the heat will become trapped upstairs.
Oh,I live the same way. I rent upstairs. I bought a small air conditioner, have a box fan to move the air to the other rooms. Everything is good! Invest in a air conditioner.Replace the box fan every year.
Have you talked to your landlord about this?, It would be a good starting point. From your description, it sounds like either poor attic ventilation or underrated insulation in the attic. It might be a problem with blocked soffet vents which are not venting the attic, which is a building maintnance issue. If your landlord is indifferent he's a fool cause it will cost a lot more to replace the roof sheathing when it rots from condensation than to clean the soffets. That's something to mention when you report the problem. Your just looking out for his building, right? good luck
OMG! I have the same problem, & upstairs the fan is on, & it's STILL hot!
open your windows and turn on a fan to circulate the air. turn off the ac, you're just fueling global warming and making the whole world hotter so each summer from now it's just gonna get hotter. make smart choices even if it means being a little uncomfortable.
Try putting you a ceiling fan in
I live in an upstairs apartment and it is hot. When I lived in a two story house we didn't have much money to run window air conditioners all the time.
What we did was closed the windows at sunrise every morning. We covered the windows with aluminum foil, but you landlord may not let you do that. We ran Fans when it wasn't too hot, and did what the other poster said; put a fan blowing air up from downstairs. If it was Really hot, we used 2 window air conditioners. After dark, we would open all the windows with fans on all night. It usually was at least 10 degrees cooler by morning. It helped that we had good ventilation and trees.
If you owned your own place or the landlord lets you make improvements, an attic fan is great, and wind turbines on the roof help. Maybe you could get the landlord to put in wind turbines.
If it is a cheaply built apartment building it will also be cold in the winter. There is usually not much insulation in apartment rooves. I hang blankets on exposed walls, put up window sealants, and towels rolled up in front of the door.
Hope this helps. bt
I lived in a duplex a couple years ago that was like this. We cut off every one of the lower level cold air vents except one in the kitchen that was left half way open and then let the vents upstairs be 100% open. That way, the thermostat downstairs sensed it was warm downstairs but it let all the air sink downstairs while still keeping it comfortable upstairs.
Check/change filter often (ours has it's own upstairs I didn't even know about).

Put Thermal Drapes to really keep heat outside.

If not apt I'd say plant shade tree ; )

& Yes, FANS!!
Check the a/c outlets and see if they are blowing. If it is a window unit then put some fans in to cool it down..Why not buy a small window unit..
Cold air falls, Hot air rises. Put a small window fan in an upstairs window on the sunny side of the house blowing out. That will bring some of the cool air upstairs or have an attic fan installed. That will take the hot air out of the attic and keep it cooler on the second floor.
