Are LPG heaters a health risk?
Question:I use two LPG heaters in my house in Southern NZ, as it is simply the most cost efficient way to get some real warmth into the old house.
But it's like running a car inside the home, albeit on LPG. It always seemed like a very clean source of energy to me, but - is it?

are the heaters properly vented to the outside of the home? If so then you have no problem. If they are what you call ODS heaters then they are fine as well. An ODS heater will go out if the oxygen in the room gets depleted Hence ODS (oxygen depletion system.)If however they are these heaters that have open burners like the ones you sometimes use at cold outdoor events then you are in trouble. To ease your mind, get yourself a carbon monoxide alert device. it looks like a smoke detector but it detects carbon monoxide and sounds an alarm before you kick out.
Using any portable source of heat that uses LPG, charcoal or anything like that, indoors, is not a good idea. They put out a lot of CO2 and such. Every winter you can hear news stories about people who die of CO2 poisoning from having such heaters in their homes. There are some oil radiator type heaters, that have oil contained within them (so, no exhausted gasses) which, with a fan blowing the warm air around the room(s) can keep you warm, safely. If you can put the fan on a level higher and behind the heater, you will lose less heat. Heat rises so, a lot will go to the ceiling and out. A ceiling fan helps too.
