Fire Ant help.?

Question:Is there a more environmental way to rid of Fire Ants here in Georgia. I just moved here and I hate using chemicals.

Answers:
Try 'Amdro'. It's a bait product the ants will feed on, and it kills the entire nest, including the queen. Most stores like 'Walmart' or any garden center should carry it. Just sprinkle it around the edges of the mounds and they'll be dead in a few days. I used to live in Texas, and used Amdro in my own yard and as a professional exterminator. Nothing was safer, easier or better. After the majority of the mounds are killed, keep some on hand. New mounds will appear periodically. I usually found the new ones when I mowed the grass. Just treat them as you find them. Teach your kids to stay away from the mounds, and tell you when they find one.

You can try a powder laundry detergent, I have never tried it but I hear it works. Fire Ants are very tough little creatures to get rid of. I tend to believe that the detergent will probaly just move them not kill them. I guess it's worth a try though.
I`m sorry, but if you really want to deal with them and "git er done", you will have to go the chemical route...but that is not as bad as some make it out to be because some garden chems. go inert after a time period. I`ve fought fire ants for 40 years and have tried everything I`ve heard of. The CHEAPEST AND BEST I`ve found is simply a tablespoon of concentrated Malathion in a gallon of water and soak the ant bed. Works every time at around .25 cents a treatment and gets %90 of a colony. Get pure undiluted Malathion, not a watered down pre-mix that stores sell. Best wishes! Bill
sorry I don't know any w/o using chemicals, but I will tell you that I lived in Florida a couple of years ago for 6 months and I used RID it is a bedding spray for lice and can be found very affordable in the pharmacy at Wall-mart it worked great and we didn't have that awful pesticide smell good luck those things are a night mare
I have not tried this out myself, but first you locate their nest, secondly you locate another nest of ants, third you take very carefully a shovelfull ant nest and place it on the other nest . There will be a battle between the ants and it will be the end of a lot of ants (and hopefully the queenmother- ant will die too), That will stop the production of new ants)
There are not any preventative products on the market that a homeowner can buy that are effective. As far as things you can do,Eliminate conducive conditions,Make sure there is no wood-soil contact, trees touching the home, moisture conditions in the home or against it,rotten wood is replaced and sealed, mulch is not piled against the house, and firewood is stored away from the home. The only products that will work are done by a professional,do not take shortcuts in protecting your home.Call a Pest Control Professional and have a proper treatment performed. The best products are baits.Sprays just scatter the ants and will result in a larger infestation. As far as treating the wood,if you can find Borate treated wood then that will help
