I am moving house and need to know how to sort out my gas and electric!!?
Question:My landlords have cancelled there energy suppliers so there is currently nothing been supplied to the house. If I call British Gas on Sunday (1st July, date i move in) will they just be able to connect the gas and electric up? Thanks
Answers:
You won't be in the dark as suppliers don't disconnect properties when they are vacant any more. The only exception is if there are prepayment meters, in which case you need to give the supplier notice so they can ensure you have credit on the meter when you move in!
When you move in on Sunday, you need to take meter readings and call the provider your landlord was using and give them the readings. You have to do this even if you are planning to use a different company to your landlord.
BG aren't open on Sunday, if you are calling them they are open Monday to Friday 8-8 and Saturday 8-6. The 'homemovers' telephone number is 08459 555 800.
Expect all the utility companies to be busy at the start of next week - due to the postal strike there will be a backlog of people getting bills and letters on Monday and calling up.
I hope everything goes smoothly for you!
Call British Gas now and find out, I am sure they will be able to sort you out.
The utility comapnies will not connect you on the day - you need to phone them as soon as you know your moving in dates or you could be in the dark for a few days eating cold baked beans. Call them NOW!!
Technically speaking yes. There should not be a problem. Preferably you call them before Sunday, like this coming Friday, explaining that you will be occupying the new place by the first July and that you would like to have the power reconnected preferably by that date if not earlier. To call power supplier on the day you move in to get the power back on is a bit of a short notice.
no not on sunday!! i would get on the phone right now and tell them you are moving into this property on sunday and is there any possibility they can connect you tommorrow otherwise your going to be without light or heating/hotwater. Also it depends what supplier the current landlords are with.
you can ring up now, and tell them the date you are moving. they will transfer your current account you have with them to your new house on the day you tell them. thats what they did with me, and my phone company.
Advise your preferred suppliers of your moving in date. Do yourself a favour and read the meter as soon as you move in and advise them of the reading so you only get charged for what you have used, and not the previous tenants consumption.
