Shoddy workmanship on fencing project.?
Question:My husband and I arranged for some fencing to be erected in our front and back garden - plus three gates too.
I paid the men £1500 and they came to do the work. They've done the fencing in the back garden, but no gates and they've done some of the back. They then said that they couldn't get hold of anymore wood for the time being and went away - that was 10 days go. We haven't seen them since. They have left some tools here and a hired concrete mixer. We also have a bloody skip outside in the road.
The workmanship on the fencing in the front garden is not brilliant and the work on the back is very poor.
I desperately need for this job to be done and the gates erected as I have a small child and I'm worried that he'll get out of the existing wrought iron gates - they're very old.
What do we do now? My husband wants to sack them, but we're worried about any comeback and don't know what to do with the tools or concrete mixer!
Any advice - legal or otherwise?
Answers:
Phone them,as there is a shortage of fencing material at the moment (honestly).
However to protect yourself demand a response or you will report them to local trading standards, which if they are legitimate should provoke a response.
Stewpot whilst I agree in part with what you have said, if you take legal action it may end up costing a lot more than £1500 This I know from chasing our debtors.
Yes there is a shortage of fencing materials at the moment, i've had to turn work down because of it and £1500 seems a bit steep, get in touch with consumer direct about the shoddy work. Oh and if the skip is on the public road u must have a permit most last for 14 days then u get a fine, get in touch with skip company to take it away
Why O why do people pay up front for work to be done. If any body ask for payment up front not just builders any body I can only say you get what you deserve. I have been in the building trade all my life, I am a joiner by trade. I have been self-employed for a lot of years and never have i asked for payment up front. with these so call workers if you can get in touch or leave a message tell them that if they are not back and working in 1 day they are sacked and you intend to keep and sell all tools etc. You will employ new contractors and any cost over the money paid out will be charged against them and you will take this to the courts . A s for Mark S he says twenty years in building trade he should know better.
you have heard of moon light flip yours called fenning flip
