What insect digs a hole in sand-like dirt?
Question:It's hole is cone shaped and when I drop something into it it kicks it back out. I cannot see what is doing this .

It could be a spider of some kind ,sand bees,termites--or it could be a snake.Sounds like a spider though.
Boo is correct..Thier slang name is a "doodlebug"..when a kid we spent endless hours dropping small ants and insects in there..the cone is to trap thier food it is made so fine by the doodlebugs that another insect cannot crawl out of thier trap... They eat other nuisance pests and are no harm to you..we used to take a little piece of stem or grass and 'tiockle" them too just to see them go into action,...you can scoop up the sand gently under your palm, filter out the sand and they will be in your hand..
