What do you charge for items at a garage sale?

Question:My Mom is having a garage sale, and I thought I'd try to sell a few things, but I'm absolutely clueless on pricing things. Like I've got clothes that I've got not problem selling for $1.00, but then I've got really nice things like a Ralph Lauren wool lined jean jacket which cost $198.00 - I can't sell that for a dollar, but I never wear it. Is $5.00 too much to ask?
What about lotions and body sprays from Bath & Body works that have NOT been used? Then I have an old lunch box collection that I've just lost interest in them. Some are worth a lot of money, but what's a good price for those? I'm so horrible at this. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Put what ever you want for it on the tag and then you could put O.B.O for Or Best Offer. I'd only do this on items that you don't know what they are worth at a yard sale like your jacket. Then if someone really wants it you can possible comedown alittle on the price but not sell it for cheaper than what you want. That person probably would have walked away and not bought it but now they they get their item and you get their money. The lotions you probably can't put to high of a price because they are a lotion or spray. I would say depending on the bottle size any where from $3.00- $0.50. If your stuff doesn't sale the first day take the price down a little the next day and just before you are done with the sale all the stuff you don't want at all tell people everything is 1/2 off people go nuts because the hear 1/2 off. They buy everything even if they don't want it or need it. Good luck.

$5 is perfectly reasonable for really nice clothes like that if they are in good condition. And for the unused lotions and stuff you can sell them for $3 to $5 and then if it isn't selling just drop the price
ok when people have a garage sale its not to turn a good profit its to make room for new or more important things but just throwing these things out when others can get more use and enjoyment out of them that's just selfish. so the point is everything is a dollar and if you are in a situation where that extra few bucks changes your life you dont need a garage sale you need a job.
$5 is good for a ralph lauren jacket but body products are hard to sell at a yard sale even if you have never touched them. Think when you are pricing stuff would i buy it for that price at someone elses yard sale. Keep a open mind!! Good Luck:)!!!!
Personally, when I go to a garage sale, I never spend over 5 dollars on any one thing unless its something big like furniture or a bike. Otherwise, I feel that if I'm going to spend that much money, I might as well get something thats not used. Price them however you want, but if they aren't selling halfway through the day, mark everything down to a couple dollars.
I have no idea where the other respondents live, nor you, but I can only answer this question from my perspective of having had at least 50 garage sales. Yeah, Im as old as the hills. lol.
if you want to get rid of things, put 50 cents on them. I have sold tons of shoes that way. If you have good things, like your jacket, put a reasonable price and be ready to bargain. I feel that a garage sale is not a charity event - just forget all the work and trouble and take it to good will or salvation army if that is your opinion. It is a place for people to get better buys than they would get at those two places tho. I always have a freebie box or two, but I am shallow enough that I want to be paid for all my work and expect to make some good dollars.and by the way I have tested the lotion and cream market and it have always been very good. ty for your applause.
there are some stores that will pay, not much but better then a garage sale, for Ralph Lauren and other name brands

the key to selling at a yard sale is just remember the old relastate mantra, it's only worth as much as some one is willing to pay for it.
some times that means sizing up the buyer,
some times that means giving discounts to bags full of items, and ofcours,
better sold then boxed, some "yard sallers" will come out around noon, your board, there cheap, but at least it's gone,

and don't be too down on yourself if you don't navigate the dangrous waters of consumer to consumer sales just right off, don't get frustrated, or needy, it makes you seem weak, and a bigger target for the experienced "saller"

just be yourself, or at least a savvy charming version there of (lol), and the common consumer will appreciate it

biggest mistake you can make, never let them make you ashamed of the products your offering, if they don't want it, they don't have to buy it, but the simple fact that there asking about it means there interested.

oh and don't forget freecylce.org (to just give it away)
and Cregs List (better then e-bay)
