Home Appliances, What brands are more reliable?
Question:Dishwashers, microwaves, stoves, trash compactors...
What manufacturers are a better investment?
Answers:
hard question to answer because all product lines and manufacturers have lemons...
motors will go bad, hoses will leak, belts will break, appliance doors will never align when closed, instllers will still have hairy butt-cracks pointed in your direction.
rule of thumb, and I will take it from a star trek movie. "The more you over-tink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain". if you like gadgets and fancey electronic controls over older (more reliable) mechanical controls, you are in for a load of costly repairs or extended waranty limbo. I will now quote a repairman..." I see a problem starting with the ., I will remember this and bring a spare part for it, in antissapation, for that the NEXT time I come up for this appliance".
OK here it is in black and white for you.
GO OLDSCHOOL.
get reliable and proven older technology on your newer appliances. Mechanical dials and knobs can only break off. electronic controls can go all "christine" on you and leave you wondering what other demons are out there.
I have seen stoves that turn on and off at random (as seen in horror movies), temperatures that change on their own, wash cycles that go on forever, microwaves that never turn off even after you push stop, driers that report cool-down and are melting your clothes, refrigerators that freeze up both sides or defrost the freezer for a week and keep the cold side normal.
you never know what is next in this world, but you can get a handle on some of the insanity with a little common sense planning.
If all else fails, hang on to your older and currently reliable stuff. I have appliances older than you (unless you are 35 or older) and they all work great.
don't get me wrong, I like new things. I am just tired of the endless expendatures to repair junk and bad ideas.
japanese brands are a good choice.
I just totally re-did my kitchen and I went with Kitchen Aid refrigerator and dishwasher and Thermador double oven and gas cooktop. I talked with many people about their experiences before making me decisions and am very pleased with my choices. I did think that cooking with gas would be much quicker than with electric and have not found that to be true...
