Our water butt collects grey water (from bathroom sink) for watering the garden. How can we stop it smelling?

Question:We try to empty it every day, but it really smells. Is there anything you can get to put in it that will stop the smell and won't damage the garden plants?
Thanks.

Answers:
if you cant empty it every day and scrub the barrel out which nobody wants to keep doing, then try a little drop of jeyes fluid in it, not only will it stop the smell it wont harm your plants, it will sterilise your soil and get rid of any pests like aphids etc have fun

The smell is from soap scum and believe or not hair, from shaving usually. I don't know how you could stop it from smelling though, may be better to collect rainwater!
Go to Walmart and in RV supplies buy a rv toilet treatment. You can buy ones that are all natural and they work to break down the smelly things.

Another option, add an aerator to the tank.
I would collect rain water only, what happens when you need to bleach the plug hole would this not go straight into the water butt
the smell would be a mixture of all sorts, facial hair, body hair, soap, shampoo, toothpaste. I cant think that this would be right to pour on plants and keep them as healthy as rain water would keep them. I am all up for recycling but this seems a step too far. would all the products in the water not cause problems with the soil altering the PH of it.
