What you do need to do is this. Take a sample (about a pint) of your pool water down to your local pool store and have them run a full spectrum analysis on it. Make sure they test for the following:
Total chlorine
Free chlorine
Combined chlorine
pH
Alkalinity
Hardness
Cyanuric acid
Total dissolved solids
Metals
Nitrites/Nitrates
Phosphates
Bring the results back and post them here or feel free to email them to me at robandliz1992@yahoo.com With this analysis we can tell exactly what's wrong with your water and exactly how to fix it. Please include the gallon size of your pool and the material it's made of (vinyl or concrete/plaster, etc).
Shocking the pool may or may not have any effect based on the chlorine demand of the pool, the level of organics, the level of combined chlorine, the level of cyanuric acid (stabilizer), the pH, level of phosphates, etc etc etc. Only a full spectrum analysis of the water will give us the answer so we are kind of stuck without it.
Any other suggestions of chemical additions without having these results is nothing more than a guess and guessing at a pool problem can create a MUCH bigger problem, so please don't do it. Since green water can be caused by algae, bacteria, and metals you won't be able to tell which to treat for without the analysis on the water. Treating for algae when copper is the problem will only cause sever staining of your pool material, skin, hair, and clothing. Yes, it is copper that causes the "Chlorine green hair" problem and NOT chlorine!
Take your water to a pool place and let them analyze it..it will be free. Then they will tell you what to put in and how much. It's so much easier than to just keep adding stuff.
Besides the chemicals and algeacide you need to brush and vacuum a lot! I have an in-ground pool and chemical-ling and cleaning up takes about a week. If that does not help I just keep adding shock to it, but keep brushing and chemical ling.
Do you use chlorine? If you do, double the amount that you usually put in. Also, read on the side of the algaecide bottle and see what it says you should put in when algae is visible.
Keep your filter running until you don't see any sign of the algae anymore. Clean your filter out real well and you should be all set.
try shocking the sh** out it with some super sun burn shock . first backwash and rinse your filter. then put it circulat not filter also add some algicide but make sure it is for black green white and mustard alage and always use more the recommended, get a pool brush so the shock doesnt clump and burn yhe linner. the next day put some super blue clairifer in it it will be clear in no time, i'm sure you proboly shocked it but the 15 minute shock and swim is just peroxide and some clorine shocks aren't very strong get the strong one first until you get some control over the green then you an use the cheeper products and i always do a 15 minute shock and swim once a week, hint when you know people are on there way over to swim run out there an 15 minute shock it a keep the filter on while there over it elimantes having to vacuum so much.
take a water sample to a pool place
have you scrubbed the liner?
