How much yard work should I do?
Question:I am moving into my first home this week and have grand ideas for the yard. Unfortunately I will be moving overseas in a year and then will be renting out the house. How much work should I actually do in the yard? Should I decorate it how I want and enjoy it for the short time I've got or just maintain it so the tenants don't have to keep up with the flowers/plants I've planted?

Just maintain it, you can buy pots of flowers and arrange them around to enjoy for now. Unfortuanately, some tennants are not at all concerned with maintaining flowerbeds and shrubs. Save your money and time and just keep it to where it's virtually maintenance free.
tennants are not renowned for their willingness or ability to maintain properties. I would think in terms of short term plantings for you and low maintenance items for the tennants..

Let it all turn to dirt then tell your new tenants that it's thier job to put flowers, grass & crap in the yard.
i would do minimal work to the yard if your not going to be staying there long. most renters, if they enjoy the yard, will just tear everything out to plant what they like anyway. either that or they wont do anything to it and let it get overgrown.
I agree to just put out pots and things to enjoy for yourself, and keep it low maintenance for the tenant. I am a tenant in a house and I do the bare minimum because it is a lot of hard work for someone else. I keep it neat but am not spending money or all that much time on the garden.
