When should I prune my Texas Privet?

Question:I bought some Texas Privet and tryiny to make a hedge. When I bought them they were about 1 foot tall, now some of the branches shot up to 3 feet tall but rest of the branches are still about 1 foot tall. When should I prune them? Should I just cut the 3 feet tall branches first and let the rest catch up? And how short should I cut them?

Answers:
The information I've found online about privet indicates that it's a hardy plant that can be trained and pruned to several shapes such as a tulip-shaped shrub or a single trunked standard.

A discussion page about Japanese Privet, which also grows in Texas is at:

There's information about European Privet at:
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/74800/...
includes this entry:
Common Privet, European Privet Ligustrum vulgare is naturalised in Texas and other States an is considered an invasive plant in Texas.

When I searched for "Texas Privet" I was offered either Texas Crinklemat or Texas Spurge, no privet was listed and no information on the other Texas specimens was listed, though the site welcomes your input about them.

I wish I could be of more help. I think I'd go ahead and cut those tall branches--it sounds as if the plant will grow almost no matter what.
