The best product on the market is called Dursban. It is sold under the Spectracide label and is available in most of the United States. There are some states where the exterminator lobby has made it only available to exterminators.
If you can buy it in your state, you will find it at most good hardware stores, or lawn and garden stores. It comes as a granule or liquid concentrate. You want the liquid concentrate.
mix a 1/2 percent solution and put it in a spray bottle. I use an old windex bottle.
Clear all the cabinets and spray just the edges where the shelf meets the wall and the sides of the cabinet. Spray under the sink around all pipe penetrations and again where the wall meets the horizontal floor or shelf. Spray along all baseboards in all rooms, under the fridge, the stove, the washer, and around any openings into the house - doors, window frames, fireplace etc.
Don't use it around unpackaged food of course, and if you have pets, don't use it around the food bowl or water.
Now you didn't indicate which type of roaches that you had. There are two common types. The small ones about the size of a pinto bean, or the very large ones that are an inch or more in length. Most homes with severe roach problems are infested with the small type of roach. The large ones are common on the Gulf Coast of Texas, and generally come inside from the yard. This is especially common when there is a lot of rain or extreme heate.
Both are easily treated with Dursban.
This product will degrade in normal sunlight, and so you will want to repeat the treatment every 30 days.
I have treated my own home and my rent houses with this product and the only roaches that I see are belly side up.
And by the way, it will take a month or so to kill all the bugs. because some of the eggs will have to hatch and expose the new roaches to the insecticide
One other thing. If you get insecticide on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water, and you can use a little bleach to get the odor off your hands.
Dursban...good stuff to kill bugs.
When my old home was infested with roaches I used the little bait traps and I placed them in places that where close too their nesting areas like under the sinks in my home, behind the toilet area, behind the fridge, behind the washing machining and etc. I would suggest if you have small children to put them in areas the children would not be able to get to them. I have recently went into Walmart and found a product that they are selling that is child and pet friendly the only real down side to it is that it has to be spread on the bug or bugs. I also would suggest that you use a commerical outdoor poison outside around the house and yard to kill the bugs from outside keeping them from getting inside or going outside and waiting for the inside poisons to die down.
My other suggestion too you is to clean up and not leave paper product just around cause roaches are able to eat almost anything so organizing your whole home and removing other food sources for them is also a good idea.
I was able to get rid of my roach and ant infestations and my landlord was very surprised and greatfull.
This will sound like an ad..:-))
I use a product called 'bug stop' and it has really worked for me.
It can be used inside or outside and they claim it works up to 9 months inside, killing all the bugs.
I believe it's true, I've seen bugs in my home but..all dead. Not only roaches. It takes care of ants and other bugs.
Do not leave any dirty dishes or pieces of food that will attract the roaches. They seem to have a terrific sense of smell.
PS: I just read what the person before me wrote. This product I'm talking about is also made by 'spectracide'. And you won't have any problem buying it.
Of course, as he says, as with ANY other bug killer you must be VERY careful if you have pets, small children and even yourself.
.
My grandmother swore by putting down Boric Acid powder.the roaches will eat it or step in it and they will die.
