I agree they are nasty little dinosaurs. Getting rid of them is work.
Remove everything from your cupboards, Everything! Wash them down with amonia and hot water.
Take everything living out of your house, except the roaches, let them stay, set off some bug bombs. Look at all of them some take longer than others to work and some work longer than others. Follow the directions exactly.
There is a spray on the market that is used both inside and outside that keeps all kinds of bugs out for 12 months and is supposed to be not toxic to kids and pets.
After you've sprayed and it's all dried. Sprinkle some Boric Acid powder in the cubboards and the junctions of the walls and shelving. This works amazingly well even alone.
Wipe your counter tops down at night with amonia as well. The little bugs will decide that you're house is an unfriendly zone and those who have survived will leave.
Tried and true remedies. Lived in military housing and it's notorious for tiny livestock.
Good luck
I live in the Southwest where roaches are very common. I also have three kids. No matter how much I clean I still get them. I have used the different sprays from Home Depot and nothing worked! Your best bet, if you can, is to call a professional. We did it a few months ago and it has made a huge difference. We had the inside and outside of the house sprayed and every month he comes to spray outside. We only pay $25 per visit, so you can't beat that!
DON'T SPRAY! Sheesh, you are just harming your kids, which freaks me out that you are using so much spray. Do you want your kids to have neurological problems? Did you realize that your children are smaller than you and can be poisoned that much more easily? I work in pesticide regulation and have seen talks about people inadvertently poisoning their children. It makes me so sad! PLEASE be careful.
Enough rant. Baits are going to be your best bet. A really good reference on how to get rid of roaches (and peer-reviewed so these methods WORK as researched by scientists) is http://ipm.ucdavis.edu . It is a great site, easy to use.
http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/pmg/pestnotes... <-- specific cockroach page.
It is based on California methods, but I think a lot of the stuff is fairly universial. Please don't spray around your kids anymore. Cockroaches are a lot hardier than they are.
NOTE: The spray they say isn't toxic to children or pets is probably in the class of insecticides called pyrethroids. Pyrethroids are a neurological toxin, and we have the same neurons that cockroaches have... Pyrethroids have been outlawed in Germany because they've been shown to stay in your dust for more than 1 year after spraying. They are incredibly persistent compared to some other common classes of pesticides...
