Do you tip builders who have done a good job?

Question:they turned up on time, did a decent job, tidied up. Is it the norm to tip beyond the overall bill?

Answers:
My husband is a builder (not a stereotypical one!) He will not leave a job until he is happy that it is to a high standard and quite often receives a tip. They do vary, but normally it's about £20. Once he did receive a very nice Christmas bonus from one customer, they were so impressed with his work they gave him £150! We had a lovely Christmas!

I don't think so. They charge a commercial rate, they should do the job they are contracted to do.
However, you can spread the good word about them, which in the end will do them more good. And a thank you always goes down well.
well, I don't know about tips... When some builders built our house , they worked almost the entire day, so we had to feed them constanty... Or if a builder was working for us only for a few hours, we treated them with a tea, or coffee .
I don't think you should tip anyone but waiters (fo some reason). If a builder has done a good job, say you'll reccomend him to everyone you know
I work for a builder and it is unethical to accept tips. The builder already marks up materials and labor approximately 70%...so why would you want to give him more.
No...do not tip your builder.he gave you the bid he expects.
good luck
Usually, they will charge you for everything they need and feel they deserve. If you feel, you need to reward them, re-hire them for another job! That would be the best reward.

Good Luck!
No they charge enough don't they, unless say it was christmas
If you think they have worked over & above the norm'. Then yes a tip can't hurt . . and you never know when you will need a builder again. Maybe buy a case of beer/wine that the whole team can enjoy. If you show your appreciation now, they are more likely to come to your aid again!

And tell us all who they are so we can help build there business and get a good job in return.
As a contractor, I have never really been tipped on any project. However, some clients have been kind enough to show up on a Friday afternoon with a few cold beer and some pizza. And after a hard day's work, that goes farther than any monetary gratuity.

Furthermore, if you tip the lead man on site, there's no guarantee the workers will ever see a dime of this gesture.
I am A paint contractor and have been given tips many times, as much as $1500.00 dollars...I always split the tip up with my hired help equally that was involved with this particular job.keep in mind, us contractors have already figured in a decent profit for ourselves, but the hourly workers, simply get hourly wages, they need the money I'm sure. I as well give production bonuses to my hired help when jobs are completed well before estimated time. The answer would be to ask the builder if the hired help could accept tips from you without offending him, or if the contractor is honest, give him a tip for his hired help, would he distribute it equally to them.
I would say it depends on the type of builder. If it is the owner/operator of a building company, then they charge enough to cover all expenses plus make a profit.

If it is a sub-contractor hired by a building company, they are given a set price to build, which they then use to pay for fuel, pay for labor, and whatever is leftover is their profit. (my husband is one of these type of builders)

He rarely gets a tip (he calls it a bonus) and only from an obviously wealthy customer. He doesn't expect to get such bonuses as the norm. His best reward is to hear praise from the customer, and have the customer tell him they will call the building company and praise him to them. Also to recommend him to their friends. On these people, he never minds if he needs to go back to look at something that might be a problem with the building and fix it. (since he doesn't get paid to fix a building he's already been paid to build unless it is a problem caused by a different crew, still covered under warranty)

So basically, my answer is. No, it is not the norm to tip beyond the overall bill.
there have been times Ive gotten a bonus (as much as $500) but never a tip. think what most have said we charge enough lol .Id say a good reference and a call back and of course thank you we love it is always great to hear
It is up to the individual if they want to or not isnt compulsory.
