What else must I do to get better yields in my tomatoes?

Question:I have done everything that the gardners told me to do.I believe in container growing. I have hudge onces. I use great top soil. Any advice? Thanks.

Answers:
Some of the tomato roots are 8-10 feet long! You are stunting them by having them in the container! My husband puts out 35-40 plants every year. He plants them directly in compost and also uses fish emulsion on them.

You could try some miracle grow or something like that, Im not exactly sure what makes a great crop of tomatoes some years ours hardly have any and others we get too many to keep up with. Im sure it has to do with the temperatures and rain/sun everything that we really cant control.
Sometimes it's just the strain of tomato and if they're determinate or indeterminate. Indeterminate will usually give better yields. Beyond that it all about water, water, and more water.
some tomato varieties work better in different areas Here in nrth Texas varieties like celebrity do awesome but beefsteak not so hot also try fish emulsion
yep. don't use topsoil. use potting mix (usually bark/sphagnum peat blends), pH adjusted with micronutrients included.

potting mix is intended for container growing and provides what a plant needs to flourish in the artificial environment that a container provides. Look at Pro-mix or an equivalent. It's available at a lot of home depot stores or better garden centers..

Be sure your containers have drainage holes in the bottom.

Fertilize with miracle grow as needed.

good luck!
